Nimbostratus
Dark, grey, featureless rain clouds.
Nimbostratus clouds are thick, dark grey, amorphous, and widespread clouds that produce continuous, moderate to heavy precipitation (rain or snow) over a wide area. They completely block out the sun.
Formation
Typically develop from thickening altostratus clouds as a weather front approaches. Formed by widespread, gentle to moderate ascent of moist air.
Altitude
Middle to Low (base usually 2,000 - 10,000 feet / 600 - 3,000 meters, but can extend through multiple levels)
Precipitation
Continuous moderate to heavy rain or snow.
