Cumulonimbus
Towering thunderclouds associated with heavy weather.
Cumulonimbus clouds are dense, vertically developing clouds, often called thunderheads. They are associated with thunderstorms, heavy rain or hail, strong winds, and sometimes tornadoes.
Formation
Develop from large cumulus clouds (cumulus congestus) due to strong, unstable air rising rapidly. Requires significant moisture and instability.
Altitude
Low base, but can extend to very high altitudes (up to 60,000 feet / 18,000 meters)
Precipitation
Heavy rain, hail, snow, thunderstorms.
Visual Characteristics
- Massive, towering appearance.
- Dark, ominous base.
- Often have a characteristic anvil-shaped top (incus).
- Can produce lightning and thunder.
