Cirrus clouds are thin, wispy clouds made of ice crystals. They are typically found at high altitudes and often indicate fair weather, but they can also be a sign of an approaching warm front.

Formation

Formed from the ascent of dry air, causing water vapor to deposit directly into ice. Often associated with the leading edge of weather systems.

Altitude

High (20,000 - 40,000 feet / 6,000 - 12,000 meters)

Precipitation

None that reaches the ground (virga sometimes occurs).

Visual Characteristics

  • Delicate, hair-like filaments or patches.
  • White or light grey in color.
  • Often have a silky sheen.
  • Can produce halo effects around the sun or moon.
